Equality Statement

Chesterton Community College is committed to realising the potential of each student within a welcoming, supportive environment where we treat others as we would like to be treated – with dignity, care and respect. As part of this College Ethos we welcome our general duty under the Equality Act 2010 to comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty to have due regard to the need to eliminate unlawful discrimination, to advance equality of opportunity and to foster good relations within the whole College community.

Chesterton Community College is committed to promoting an inclusive culture that respects diversity and difference across our College and local community.  Equality legislation protects people from discrimination on the basis of nine strands of human diversity, known in legal terms as protected characteristics. These are age, disability, gender, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief and sexual orientation. Every member of the College community has more than one of these protected characteristics and so the law protects everyone against unfair treatment.

At Chesterton Community College we also welcome our duty under the Education and Inspections Act 2006 to promote community cohesion.

The College recognises that in seeking to enable each member of the College community to realise his or her full potential and to ensure fair treatment for all, what is important is how we use equality data, how policies and procedures are written, implemented, monitored, and evaluated and how our aims and ethos are fulfilled through our practices. We seek to move beyond compliance to best practice.
