Week Ending 14th September

A positive second week to term with staff and students working their way through the new week B timetable and still adjusting to the slight changes to the timing of the school day. Year 7 have continued to settle really positively and are enjoying the challenges of finding their way around school.
On October 4th we will be hosting our Open Evening for Year 6 students. It promises to be an exciting event with opportunities to walk through a flood-lit building site and see the scale of our new build; chances to use virtual reality headsets and see current students performing both music and drama. Please do let any friends know about the event.
The builders are now continuing to work exclusively on the new build section of our expansion programme. Having handed over a number of refurbished areas last week the builders are working in the main compound. Now that the steel structure has been fully completed we can see the new floor slabs going in across the whole area and we expect to see the walls start to go up in the coming weeks.
At the start of term we were very excited to see the boarding around our Wilmot Dixon compound transformed with the faces of our students. The self-portraits were produced by Year 9 students (now in Year 10) in their art lessons…who can you recognise?
We have said ‘Au revoir’ in the early hours of Wednesday morning to our French exchange partners who spent a week with 26 Year 9 Students and their families; they all benefited from the enriching experience. French students were impressed with the sights of Cambridge and many enjoyed a trip to London at the week-end. Thank you to the host families who have welcomed our guests.
Our thriving and experienced exams invigilator team has some vacancies. We run the Year 10 and Year 11 internal and external exams, during November, May and June. Training is provided, and the team is very supportive of newcomers. If you would like to find out more about the work and how to apply, kindly get in touch with our Exams Officer: Nicola Von Schreiber nvonschreiber@chesterton.cambs.sch.uk.
In last week’s blog, the drama department promoted the GCSE 2018 Company’s forthcoming performances taking place on Tuesday 18th September between 6pm and 9pm in the Performing Arts Centre. Further to that notice, Ms Marston would like to advise the following to all those attending:
TRIGGER WARNING: We don’t want to spoil anyone’s experience of a new play at Chesterton and therefore avoid giving too much away when promoting the play. It’s often the unexpected, shared moments and plot twists that capture the audience and create the debate and conversation beyond the performance.

The age guidance for ‘Set Them Free’ (the five devised pieces created by Year 11 Drama Students) is 14 years plus. Anyone who is under this age may only attend the work in the company of a responsible adult, and with parental consent. Please be warned that some of the devised work, loosely based on the life and works of Vincent Van Gogh, contains mild swearing, images and references to sexual assault, death and mental illness. Photography or filming of any kind is not permitted. Please be aware that the work is being assessed by the teacher-examiner and filmed for this purpose.
The drama department would also like to promote their extra-curricular clubs. Some of them have begun this week and some will begin over the course of September. Students should see the drama notice board in the entrance way to the Performing Arts Centre for further information. There are opportunities for students from every year group to become involved in extra-curricular drama at Chesterton, and there will be at least one opportunity for all those who attend clubs to perform to the public during the course of this academic year, in a context which is appropriate to their age and ability. Information about public performances will be released as time goes on but, for this term, Year 10 will be performing a production of ‘Twelfth Night’ on 10th/11th December: the perfect Shakespeare play for Christmas!
Sports coaches at Chesterton
The college sports clubs have all started! The programme of activities is being supplemented with a variety of highly qualified coaches throughout the year. This week it was great to see coaches from the Cambridge Tennis Academy, Cambridge Rugby Club, and a national standard basketball coach.
Other clubs include hockey, table tennis, badminton and an opportunity to use the fitness suite every afternoon
We are delighted to once again be invited to take part in an cultural exchange visit with Yuyuantan High school in Beijing China, this will take place in January with the Chinese students visiting Cambridge and with Chesterton students visiting Beijing in April 2019. This is an amazing opportunity for students in years 8 & 9, students will take part in lessons with their partners, visit historic cultural sights, learn independence and resilience. This visit is part funded by the Chinese Board of Education. Last year students visited the Great Wall of China, the Summer Palace and resided in homes with their Chinese Partners. If you or your child would like further details of this amazing opportunity please email kwilliams@chesterton.cambs.sch.uk or ask your child to find me in the Design Block.

We were delighted this week to host alongside Cambridge Assessment a delegation from the Singaporean Ministry of Education who spoke very highly of the classes and students they saw during their visit.
