To the untrained eye it doesn’t look like the builders have been doing much in the last week, but they are still working hard on our new building. They have been damp-proofing the main structure, continuing to lay the floor slabs and excavating areas for our new services (water and gas) to run.
38 Year 10 students impressively stepped a little closer to completing their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award last weekend; each navigating their way across 30 km of beautiful Suffolk countryside. In contrast to the practice expedition in July, when the weather was 35 degrees, the weather was perfect and the participants showed real motivation, team work and humour: having progressed their knowledge and skills from the first session held back in January. The DofE Bronze award is offered to Year 9 students at the end of the Autumn term. It draws to an end following the assessed expedition at the start of Year 10. For any parents of children in Year 9 please do tell your children to keep a look out for a DofE introduction meeting which will be held after half term.

Mrs Murray Williams launched Artsaward Bronze last week. Year 9 students were invited to attend a meeting to find out more about the award and sign up. Artsaward Bronze is offered as a voluntary extra-curricular activity for students who love art and are keen to do more art based activities. Students are required to: work independently; visit an exhibition or attend an art event; research an artist they admire; make their own artwork and share their skills with others. They are supported in school to provide the evidence required to pass the award. A letter regarding this has been sent via Parentmail, however, please do get in contact with Mrs Murray Williams if you think your child would be interested but they missed the meeting. It is a wonderful opportunity for any keen artists and a great preparation for any of our Art and Design GCSEs here at Chesterton.
MFL is delighted that over 30 students have signed up for our twilight Italian classes, which start this Thursday, Period 7 in B13, as a taster session. The classes are for beginners as well as those who wish to improve their Italian in preparation for a GCSE and we have a great mixture of ab initio and bilingual students signed up. We are very excited to be able to offer a new language to our ever flourishing department!
Music extra-curricular activities are now in full swing but new members are always welcome; please do encourage your child to attend a group.
The first Teatime Concert, for new Year 7 students, will take place on Tuesday 9th October at 3.45pm in M1. This is an opportunity for all Year 7 students to perform an instrumental or vocal piece of their choice to a friendly and supportive audience. Interested students should sign up on the sheet on the door to M1.
Congratulations to Year 10 students: Gracie Lewis, Jonny Potter and Joseph Rodgers, who have all been selected for the England U17 Korfball squad.
The first hockey and rugby fixtures of 2018 have taken place already. The great attendance levels at all the clubs, have obviously contributed to great performances: most notably, the Year 8 hockey, Year 9 hockey, Year 10 rugby and Year 11 rugby teams are yet to be beaten! The Year 9 rugby team only marginally lost their first game against last year’s district schools’ rugby tournament winners.
Year 7 hockey and rugby teams will make their debuts in only a week or so!
This year, we have launched a ‘new look’ PSHE programme for form time. Switching from traditional paper booklets to a digital learning programme, students have spent the last two weeks working on developing a growth mindset, promoting positivity and resilience in their school work. They also learned a few surprising facts about their own teachers’ own school days, including some less than glowing comments from their old school reports!
